Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University’s Student Government Association is providing 53 Thanksgiving meal kits to students in need from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the weeks of Nov. 17th and 23rd to support families in challenging times.

The initiative replaces FranU’s annual Turkey Bowl in response to student food insecurity. SGA recognized that some students may go without a Thanksgiving meal and wished to provide direct support to the campus community during the holiday season.

“We shared an opportunity for students to pick up Thanksgiving meal kits provided by SGA, and the response was overwhelming,” said Rebecca Gruntz, Director of Franciscan Student Life and Servant Leadership. "Thanks to the generous support of our faculty and staff we were able to nearly double the number of students who received a kit.”

Each meal kit includes a turkey and traditional fixings for a complete Thanksgiving meal.

SGA initially expected 30 requests but quickly surpassed that number. To meet the growing demand, the association reached out to faculty and staff for donations and received overwhelming support.

Students expressed appreciation for the effort. One anonymous student said, “Thanks for the heart filled love during these tough times. The kit will help to relieve pressure on me as I know that tuition fees are right around the corner.”

SGA member Anthony Prather said, “This feels like the most Franciscan thing SGA has done since my being on campus.”

The Association recently voted to begin providing monthly support to the Food Pantry and hopes to continue the Thanksgiving meal kit initiative in future years. Much of the donated food and supplies from this project will help sustain Pantry operations and increase awareness of the resources available to all students.
