“My name is Monei Thomas, a 34-year-old woman whose life has been shaped by resilience, faith and determination.”

Thomas’ story begins in Carbondale, Illinois. The youngest of seven children, her world shifted when her mother passed away. At just a year and a half old, she moved to Detroit to be raised by her grandmother, an experience that instilled strength and perseverance at an early age.

“Years later, just before starting high school, I faced another turning point when my grandmother became ill,” Thomas said.

She returned to Illinois to live with her eldest sister, and shortly after graduating high school, she joined the United States Army to serve as a Military Police Officer.

“Basic training taught me more than physical strength. It built mental resilience to push through challenges I once thought impossible,” she said. “My deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan strengthened my discipline, teaching me the importance of vigilance and the dangers of complacency in both high-stakes environments and everyday life.”

Her time in the military began her formation as a leader.

Serving as a Drill Sergeant was one of the most defining experiences of my career. It shaped me into a leader who leads from the front, entrusted with transforming America’s sons and daughters into confident, capable soldiers.”

During basic training, she met the love of her life.

“After deploying to Afghanistan, we married at the age of 20—a decision rooted in love, commitment and shared purpose. Over the past 14 years, we have built a strong family together and are proud parents to two beautiful daughters.”

After seven years of active duty, Thomas made the intentional decision to transition to the Reserves, allowing her to be more present with her family while continuing her service.

In 2016, she began serving in a new way. After attending dental school, she worked as a surgical dental assistant from 2017-2022, gaining valuable hands-on experience. But through her work with patients, she discovered a deeper calling.

I realized I had more to offer—more compassion, more care and a greater impact to make. Nursing became the path that allowed me to expand for that purpose.”

That calling led her to FranU. Drawn to its mission of forming servant leaders, Thomas saw the University as a place where her values and purpose aligned.

“I loved the opportunity to not be a leader, but a servant leader. I love the ministry that FranU has, and that their core values aligned a lot with my own. FranU feels like a family like the relationship I built with those I served with.”

However, the transition from military leader to student was not simple.

Stepping into the role of a student required me to embrace humility and a new perspective. While the military strengthened my physical endurance and discipline, becoming a student pushed me to develop my mental resilience in entirely new ways.”

FranU's community played a vital role in her growth.

“FranU’s environment is so positive. I love the connectedness I felt between my peers and faculty. I always felt like a had a cheerleading team around me when seeking help.”

The University’s emphasis on holistic education has formed Thomas into a professional who is not only skilled, but compassionate. That formation is reflected in the care she provides.

“Working in the hospital has given me the opportunity to be present for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives,” she said.

After graduating with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2024, Thomas chose to continue her education at FranU and is now a student in the Master of Health Administration program, further preparing her to lead in healthcare.

Returning to FranU was a meaningful decision for me, driven by the possibility of one day giving back as an educator and helping shape the next generation of healthcare professionals."

As she continues her journey, Thomas remains grounded in the lessons that have shaped her life.

“My journey has not been easy, but every challenge has shaped who I am today. I strive to be the person who can brighten someone’s day, even in the smallest way.”

She continued, “In moments when others feel overwhelmed or uncertain, I hope to offer a sense of comfort and a reminder that they are not alone bringing even a small spark of hope when it’s needed most.”
