Dr. Bellar

Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. David M. Bellar has been selected as a member of the inaugural class of the National Academy of Health and Physical Literacy (NAHPL) Fellows, a national honor recognizing exceptional leadership and lasting contributions to the advancement of health and physical literacy.

Dr. Bellar will be formally recognized during the NAHPL Summit on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, where the Academy will celebrate its first-ever class of Fellows. The distinction places him among a select group of leaders whose work has significantly shaped policy, education and practice in health and physical literacy across the country.

The NAHPL is a national organization that advances health and physical literacy through education, leadership and advocacy across schools, higher education and community settings. Physical literacy refers to the skills, knowledge and confidence people need to move effectively and enjoyably throughout life, supporting a person’s overall health.

I am deeply honored to be named an inaugural Fellow of the National Academy of Health and Physical Literacy,” said Dr. Bellar “This recognition reflects a shared commitment to advancing the dimensions of health and physical literacy so that individuals of all ages can make informed, healthy choices throughout their lives. As a fellow, I intend to continue supporting the growth of health and physical literacy, collaborating with colleagues and partners to expand opportunities that promote healthier, more active lives for all.”

Trained as an exercise physiologist, Dr. Bellar has dedicated his career to advancing evidence-based approaches to health, physical activity and education. As president of FranU, he brings that expertise into executive leadership, guiding interdisciplinary education, applied research and the preparation of mission-driven health professionals.

Dr. Bellar’s selection as an NAHPL Fellow reflects not only his individual accomplishments, but also the broader mission of FranU to advance health, education and service in ways that positively impact communities.
