Welcome to the Standardized Patient Orientation Page

Standardized patients are specially trained individuals who simulate real patients for the purpose of teaching, practicing, and assessing the medical examination skills of clinical students.

These dedicated individuals play an instrumental role in the education and evaluation of clinical skills, which include:

  • Physical examination
  • Communication
  • History taking
  • Patient counseling
  • Patient education
By participating, standardized patients contribute significantly to both the teaching and assessment processes of medical education. They are trained to provide constructive and non-threatening feedback on the completeness and style of "patient" interactions.

Standardized patients can expect to be involved in one-on-one, small group, or large group sessions that may take place in classroom settings or clinical exam rooms. Prior to the standardized patient's (SP) first experience the SP is required to watch an orientation video and complete necessary paperwork, both available on this webpage. The video will provide a brief orientation, guide you on how to enter the facility, where to sign in and out, and what to expect during your day as a standardized patient.

To ensure a smooth orientation process, please complete all preparatory tasks before arriving and plan to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time. This preparation is essential for a successful and productive experience. We look forward to your contribution to the medical education community.
